First of all I don't believe I know of one real "invention" done by anyone. Usually someone comes up with an idea shouts "eureka"and tries to make it work, then someone else picks up where they left off and comes closer to making it work and the scenario continues until someone gets the idea to work. It then goes through improvements and is given alternate uses as time goes on. So to answer your question I think the greatest invention/discovery in the last 100 years was the atom being split. It's first uses were for destruction, but later it allowed the production of electricity to be used by people who would not be able to have or afford to have it in many places. It has a great impact on society because of it's double edged applications. Because of this invention/discovery it has brought about vast changes in medicine, and gave rise to many other inventions/discoveries most of which benefit mankind. But it's darker applications also created an aura of fear due to someone using it's by products to produce weapons of mass destruction.
All out wars that have been a part of our world since "civilization" was first created, are no longer an option. Winning and losing is not always a clear cut matter any longer.
