The incident never occurred and was a much later. (post his death I beleive) fabrication.

The man would have still been the impressive man he was.

If nothing else his physical stature was sufficiently imposing in a humble man that little would have changed.

The cherry tree incident is actually a complete fabrication, perpetrated by a biographer to sell more books. He did a damn good job, too, since the anecdote found its way into the history books.
