I'm not sure what you mean, but I'll take a stab. Mostly they're scared. When you're brought up in an atmosphere of fear, criticism and shame, you learn to criticize and bully other people. People who are secure in who and what they are seldom feel the need to lord their superiority over others.

The way you've asked this, the one has nothing to do with the other. Playing it smart suggests 'playing the percentages,' weighing all the options and choosing the one with the greatest likelihood of working out to your advantage, even though that choice may not promise the greatest pay off.
Walking in someone else's shoes refers to making an effort to understand another person's perspective. It explores compassion and understanding rather than judgment and condemnation based on appearance. If ever the two things are related, or considered at the same time, it is purely a matter of coincidence.

Pandor the cat gave a really great answer to this: yes we should learn a few things from our parents but walking in someonelse's shoes is not something that is a learned behaviour(in my opinion) in each step of our lives you learn something everyday by watching or listening to other people.Just rember the footsteps of one is not the footsteps of another you have your own style and ability of getting through each day and walking in your own shoes is the best way to approach life.Although you learn from someonelse's steps always incorperate your own ideas and maybe someone else will learn from you.

It's called self-preservation. That's that pesky little tendency to believe that our views are correct, that our thoughts and behavior is right and justified, and that our needs and priorities are most important and that they trump all others. Some people feel so strongly that they try to convince others their views are correct, or even force their views on others. Sometimes people feel threatened by opposing views and force their own views on others to further justify their own, and stomp out opposing views.
We all possess different levels of narcissism and empathy. It is the job of our parents to teach us things we were not born with. Those things being respect, appreciation, gratitude, conscience, and self-confidence. They are supposed to discourage aggressiveness, narcissism, opressiveness, selfishness, spite, overbearing dominance, deception, and cheating.
Sometimes parents are too self-absorbed to realize this, as they are too busy with their fast-paced lives, or feel too much guilt to realize their authority, importance, and effect on their children's lives.
Empathy is the singlemost attractive and valuable human quality and it is the job of the parents to instill that on their children.

It's called "egotism." And note to J S: How does Harley find it in that neighborhood? You speak better English in that other persona too. Although your example is clever and perceptive. (Disclaimer: This is an observation, not chatting.)
