Many modern dogs are bored because they have no outlet for the mental and physical energy for which they were bred. As a consequence of this boredom, modern dogs have developed behavioral problems. Often this behavior is exhibited through barking. This is sometimes useful behavior, such as when chasing off a prowler. Other times it can be bothersome and inconvenient. And let's not forget the legal ramifications. In many communities, a barking dog can mean fines and even time in court!

For a couple of reasons. One is that they may be happy to see a special someone, like their owner thats why they started barking.
Secondly, they may be afraid of something, things that make their instinct goes hay wire and they too bark.
Thirdly, they barked at times to get attentions from people or to get help.

It is their way of expressing theirselves. Some express more than others and need to be trained . Really they are only talking to us and to other dogs.
