Looking back now isn't it strange that they and a very large number of people could have bought into such a stupid idea.? What were these people thinking?

The idea is not really stupid. Some of it has even been incorporated into the American system, like free public education.
Their entire idea could work in a small setting of a few individuals with the same goal.

Greed by the upper party members destroyed the concept of marx who did not include 30% of the nations wealth being given to defense .
Once you factor the greedy top 10% out and the high defense budgets and wasted productivity on weapons you would of had a system in which all people had homes food and a good living working around 30 hours a week .
