Monterey, fisherman's wharf area, has good restaurants, the 26 time or 12 mile, can't remember drive is famous and beautiful.

Carmel, so nice, lots of shops; good food, say hi to Clint Eastwood and Doris Day

Go to Solvang in the Santa Barbara Mountains, the Santa Inez mission, the bakery with the big windmill. It's a Danish town from the 19th Century; still ancestors of the original farmers there.

drive through the Lompoc area, especially if it's flower season, they grow flowers for seeds there.

Santa Barbara, interesting Mission. Main street has good shopping and food.

Drive through LA if you've been there before, otherwise, Farmer's Market and the new exclusive shopping area next to it. Rodeo Drive where the rich shop. Mann's Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Blvd, Disneyland, Oh, forgot staying a day in LA to see the Getty Museum would be worth the stay.

Laguna Beach, shops and art.

San Diego, eat at a street restaurant on 5th Ave, Walk around first and check them all out. A great restoration in that area. The Gaslight District, Old Town, THE ZOO!!!!!!, Go for an afternoon's shopping in Tijuana, across the border, but take the trolly right to the border and leave the car in SD.

That ought to keep you busy a couple of days. LOL Have Fun.

Check online about motel/hotels, but probably if you pick a chain, you may get a discount and can make reservations from one place to the next in the morning before you leave, and after you have set your itinerary. Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express (!!), Marriott courtyards. Oh, also in LA, the cheapest and BEST place is by the airport. Go to www.priceline.com. Make an offer for $40/$45 and you often get the Hilton/Sheraton/ or Marriott Courtyard. Best deals in LA, about 1/2 Drive to Hollywood, 45 minutes to Disneyland, or take tours from the hotel, Laguna is about 1 hr south of LAX, another hr to SD.

You should take highway 1. It's beautiful and there will be lots of views of the beaches and you'll pass places on the way that you might want to stop at. Be warned though that highway 1 will take a lot longer than some of the larger freeways. Highway 1 is often only a 1 lane road and you can get stuck behind a truck for miles. However, if time isn't an issue than you should take highway 1. The views are worth it.

Take the Pacific Coast Hwy (US 1) if you have the time to spare. It is absolutely breathtaking with its winding road, ocean views, and mountain foothills. Now, stop and see (north to south):

1. Monterey Peninsula...13 mi. drive, Pebble Beach, Carmel, Fisherman's Wharf, Pacific Grove...take the Movies Made in Monterey bus tour and go on a whale watching boat; take tea at the Patisserie in Carmel, excellent choc. eclairs

2. San Simeon...Hurst Castle...nice little summer home for William, absolutely fantastic what a little money will do

3. Solvang...a bit of Scandinavia in the U.S.

4. LA beach towns...Malibu, Venice, Newport Beach, etc...great shopping and people watching, also biiiiig beach; check out the Getty Villa in Malibu (If you go inland, you can take in DisneyLand...Disney Village is free and has some great restaurants.)

5. Yorba Linda---check out the Nixon library

6. La Jolla and Mission Bay---great restaurants, ocean views, and water sports in the Bay; go to Sea World and dine with Shamu, the Orca whale; there are plenty of motels on the Bay

7. San Diego---old town for some great Mex food and margaritas; drive Silver Strand and go to Coronado and its Del Monte Hotel where "Some like it hot" with Marilyn Monroe was filmed; have great seafood at Anthony's on the sea wall in downtown San Diego.

Some places I would not spend much, if any, time at include: Hollywood, LA proper, Interstate 5

I had stayed in San Francisco last year x 1 month then in Contra Costa Country x 1 month, then to San Diego x 2 months.
You can drop in at Anaheim and see the magic of Disney. We had stayed in the motels across and they are really affordable. You can spend 1 whole day in Disneyland and the other day, explore also the California Adventure, just opposite the entrance of DIsneyland. We just took out some food & ate it in our room, we bought food at Panda, it is cheap and good. See also the Universal Studios and Hollywood. If you have more time, try going to knottsberry farm at Buena Park. Theres an eat all you can Asian Buffet just walking distance from Knottseberry Farm, it is one of the best buffet restaurants I had eaten over in California.
Along the way to San Diego, you can also drop by Orange Country, Laguna Niguel, Alisso Viejo and Irvine are quiet places.
San Diego is more quiet than LA. It is probably due to the fact that it is too traffic in LA compared to San Diego.
In San Diego see Carlsbad and see Legoland, or see the lovely bridge of Coronado which is one of the most tallest bridge in USA. It was awarded as one of the best bridge in USA also. Try dropping in Hotel Coronado, which is also one of the best hotels in USA.
Comparing San Francisco with San Diego. I was able to go around San Francisco with just a map. San Diego is more bigger! I was only able to appreciate the whole of San Diego when I rode the trolley. Be sure that you leave your car in a safe place when you ride the trolley. It is also one way of relaxing and seeing more of San Diego. There are also buses in stations with trolleys. Get the oppurtunity of seeing the last American exit in Sa Isidro! There is an outlet store over there.
While in San Diego, see the Sea World and San Diego Zoo. See also the harbor side. Mariott Hotel is a nice place to stay it gives a wonderful view of the harbor place!

Romantic will be what appeals to you and your other. There are probably lots of good options. Stay off the interstates for scenic and other stuff. Try contacting AAA. They may want you to join, but if you have an older car, the service might be worth having for a longer trip.

project and fifth isn't a secure place to park and in case you're able to desire to retrieve your automobile at nighttime a lot of winos.....you have toddlers.... Pacifica, is fantastic (some areas) yet I consider abuela.... it may be greater trouble-free, safer, greater much less costly, much less time to stay in San Francisco....I even have toddlers and that i additionally agree it extremely is fantastic to be close to the lodge/lodge then after an afternoon of sightseeing to could want topersistent yet another half-hour.and get lower back to the place ever you parked...I stay right here yet I even have stayed in some lodges/lodges and by no skill paid for parking could be a sparkling factor unlikely to declare it no longer actual...i could ask when I booked my room...i will think of of four lodges that don't fee for parking......Rush hour could be each time something is occurring like a ball recreation getting out......The parking a lot at the instant are not liable for something stolen.... Your lodge/lodge has greater effective protection....
