As you can see, almost everyone has fallen prey
to the urban legend of the black widow spider's
killing her mate. I know a man who raised many
black widows in captivity. He said he had watched
500 matings, and had never seen the female kill
the male.
Any kind of spider, if disturbed in some way during
mating or if kept in unfavorable conditions, may kill
and eat its mate. It is probably more often the
female that does this, because she is heavier than
the male, but it could sometimes be the male that
does the killing. It is extremely rare for any species to kill its mate as a routine event. I have
heard of only one kind of spider of which this may
be true, and it is an araneid, not a theridiid. I don't
remember the name of the particular species.
Your supposed Yale university biology professor
is scarcely qualified to give an answer if he thinks
a daddy long legs is a spider. I've never heard the
story of mate killing attributed to any daddylonglegs, anyway.

It is the Black widow. It got it's name because of this habit.
After these black colored spiders mate, the female spider kills its mate ( and hence becomes a widow). This is thought to be done so the female is ensured enough nutrition to be able to take care of all of it's eggs. The male spider probably wouldn't have lived long enough to mate again, so this is actually quite profitable for the species.
Class : Arachnida
Order : Araneae
Family : Theridiidae
Common Name : Black Widow spider
Scientific name : Latrodectus mactans

The Black Widow spider has that reputation, and is certainly the one you are asking about.... but
From the site below:
"Adult male Black Widows wander in search of females but do not feed or bite. Females may occasionally kill and eat a male after mating but this is more the exception than the rule."

I think that your talking about a Black Widow,,,,, that is why when you hear of these women , who are serial killers .. killing their husbands for cash or numerous boy friends that is why you hear the phrase 'Black Widow" . After the spider.. the BLACK shiny .one . with the red -orange Hour glass... If you live in Fla .. you need only to go out in your yard.... and look under or behind something... there everywhere.
