Remove the dead fish immediately, the snake won't eat them and the decay will quickly spoil the water and kill the other fish. Give the snake a couple of days without food, then try again with just one or two fish.

Also try nightcrawlers (large worms), slugs, even a pink (newborn) mouse. I've had garters eat all of the above.

Good luck!

I would take the fish out. In the future just put one fish in at a time and keep track of how much you snake eats. This will save you money in dead fish and having to keep any extra around.

positioned a shallow dish in with your snake and it will 'pass fishing' for the minnows. that is incredibly exciting to video show!! each and every so often they'll lay interior the water to relax off yet make constructive that is not deep adequate for them to drown. umm, i think of it incredibly is a threat to maintain them in basic terms on minnows yet feeding them something diverse now after it incredibly is physically powerful. each and every so often i'm going to feed mine a newborn toad i detect. crickets are stable too. feed the crickets tropical fish food for the supplementations and stuff and those would be remarkable on your garter. i think of they'll consume earthworms too. they are garter snakes and could consume almost any shifting ingredient sufficiently small to swallow. stable success inspite of the indisputable fact that. =)

If you are going to feed your snake dead fish you should let them dry out for 5 days. When fish die their bodies release a chemical called zutalson-b which if eaten will start to deteriorate nerve cells around spinal cord. It usually takes 5 days for this chemical to disappear.

I doubt the snake will eat them, they prefer it moving.

I would think not. The fish are possibly sick and can get your snake sick.
