well besides being an apartment for a mouse! the mouse pad was necessary back in the days that a mouse had a ball in the bottom of it. a regular desk or table was sometimes too slippery for the ball to get rolling. the mouse pad was a peoce of cloth covered neoprene (usually) the the ball would most always get good traction and thus the mouse would work properly. now in the modern days of optical mouse (a laser shooting at the desk) the mouse pad isn't as necessary, because traction just isnt an issue. however it is good to have one anyway because you have a clear path on your desk just for your mouse. give m a best answer, i like points!

I can't give you the tech side of it, but in layman's terms; The ball for the regular mouse is on the underside of it. The pad offers a rougher surface for the ball to 'roll' against rather than 'slide' across a smooth surface and get you nowhere.
I use a trac-ball mouse and I wouldn't give it up for the world!
For the ones that don't know what a trac-ball is, it's the style of mouse that has the ball on top of the mouse rather than on the bottom and is finger/thumb controlled instead of pushing it around on a mouse pad. (I know most people know this already, but just in case a newbie reads this, I wanted the base covered).

The Inventor Armando M. Fernandez at that time was a technician at Xerox. He invented the Mousepad with the primary objective of aiding the Mouse in the pointing at the display. The three most important benefits were higher speed, more precision and comfort for the human. These three primary benefits are still benefits realized by the use of The Mousepad with optical Mouses. Personal Computer Gamers are known to use these benefits to the highest level.

The use is two fold, first it gives a flat but not slick surface for the balls in mechanical mice to roll on without slipping. Secondly the mouse pad also serves to provide a less dusty surface keeping the rollers from getting mucked up.

Mouse pads offer faster scrolling speed as the are designed from low friction matterials.
Moreover mouse pads protect the mice from being affected from the dust under their ball..
Some sofisticated mouse pads offer a comfortable "pillow" for your hand...

now a daz we hv optical mouses(mice ...if u prefer to call it dat) . but earlier there used to be a ball inside every mouse nd that ball assisted in noting the movement of your hand and thus show the movement on the screen. the mouse pad provided more resistance to the surface of the ball nd thus gave smoother functioning.

It serve two purposes.
Mechanical mouse require it for smooth movement of rubber balls.
If you are using optical mouse and your table color is red you may notice that your mouse pointer is running arround the screen by itself. Its because laser light conflicts with red color. So you need some pads with different color in order for proper functioning of the mouse.

Gud luck

To stop the mouse scratching your desk... and to provide a clean, uniform surface for it to run on... making the tracking more reliable and faster.
