Well swords can do damage and can kill. But lies spread about a person can destroy an entire family, particularly if the lies remain unchallenged or are unknown to the person they are about. Liars can cause other people to be ostracised within a family and the victim of the lies can commit suicide. My sister's a psychopath but I was unaware of this until I investigated her continued appalling behaviour since childhood. See link below

SWORDS ARE MORE HONEST THAN WORDS.

Depends on which one I got most often. When I was young, words hurt me more since I didn't know better. Now I am beyond 20 and found my remedy against words, by creating a habit of talking back as cruel as I can and shut them up. Three years ago I went in for surgery and after surgery, I could actually feel every single cut the surgeon made as though I was awake when he operated on me. The cut healed perfect and everything went fine, but everytime I remember that surgery, I could feel the pain all over again. If I were to be attacked by swords, I hope these people are really good assassins, so that I can die and don't have to live to feel the pain all over again.

The pen is said to be mightier than the sword. Sticks and stones may hurt the bones but words can hurt the soul.

Sword wounds can be cured but hurtful words go deep into the soul and there is no balm for that.

Even if sword cuts a persons head he is freed from pain immediately. Words Hurt for ever and go even beyond the grave.
Words are eternal and they remain hidden for ever.
This is why the proverb pen is mightier than the sword

Two different types of hurt. One is emotional hurt, the other physical pain. One you may not survive, the other you'll live. Since there is no guarantee that you'd survive a stab from a sword, I would rather be hurt with words. I might remember it forever, but I'll survive and continue to live my life.

Both have the potential to cause mortal harm.
A sword skillfully wielded can hurt or kill at the discretion of the swordsman.
A sword waved about with no skill can harm or kill at random.
Words, used carefully and with much thought, can cut the soul as deeply as the skillfully wielded sword cuts the flesh.
Words, spoken carelessly and without thought, have the same potential.

It depends on the person. If someone is overly sensitive then words, but if they don't really care than a sword. I would say a sword since I would rather be called a nasty name than be stabbed.

Of course WORDS.
The wound given by a sword can and does heal. But the injury cause by spoken words lasts a life-time.

One would assume that the 'pen' is far mightier than the 'sword' in today's information age particularly in/among democratic, developed countries but the speed of dissemination and sheer volume we are innundated with do not allow much to 'stick' and therefore do much good or damage, and this in itself could actually be hurtful for us in the long run.

Proverbs/idioms do stick, however, because they are based on experience. So,'actions speak louder than words' and 'sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never harm me' are both worth considering in answer to your question.
