can any1 help me? need idea for my son by tomorrow and then he needs research. PLEASE DO NOT GIVE ANY WEBSITES UNLESS THEY ARE ABOUT ONE OR TWO SPECIFIC PROJECTS. we've looked at hundreds, but none are worthy of experimentation. Please make sure they are experiments and not fun projects-they have to be testable-control group, variable, etc. (Oh yeah i need middle school ideas for my son, and no botanyy please.) thanks

I started making a rail gun once, but the parts i found ended up being better used to make a computer.

The judges had never seen a homemade computer before (this was 1958) and they mis-categorized it in earth sciences.

But enough whining about the past. How about something with a miniature electric car and regenerative braking. Use something like a heavy drum for the "road" instead of having the car move.

The problem with regenerative braking is that people try to stop their car faster than a battery can be charged.

Faster/cheaper: buy a big package of seeds, tomato seeds (not hybrids) are pretty cheap. set up several pots of soil and put 10 seeds on the surface of each, then water with various qualities of water, distilled, tap water, salty water, etc. and record the effects of various water on the new seedlings.

I have a science project that I actually began in eighth grade. I won honors for this and someone can actually takes this much further than I did as my interests in life changed. I am now 32 by the way.

The name is
Toxicity Testing Concerning Daphna Magna

Daphna Magna are the little no see-ums in pond or lake water. They are sensitive to their environment. A science teacher or parent can order them online or through a science project company.

What you do is take them and place them in seperate environments. Same amounts in each, if you use a microscope you can count them.

Now think about what these things can be exposed to in your area i.e., soda (Coke is the worst), laundry detergents, boat motor oil, the possibilities are limitless.

What I did with mine to add a little "holy cow" factor is exposed one culture of them to tap water. I won't tell you the outcome but it is amazing and makes people think.

Anyways, hope this helps and it is a great project. Like I said I won several Entimology Society Awards at the local and state level. If you think broad enough with pollution ideas this could take your child nationally.
