Pretty people reach for an impossible standard, and that leaves them insecure.
Less than pretty people know where they are and are secure in it.

It depends on how they were raised. Many people were raised in an environment that did not promote self-esteem. Therefore, people have a low perception of themselves. As they grow, circumstance may reinforce that. For example; a person grows up in a house that does not promote self-esteem, goes to h.s. and is the tallest in the class, always being picked on for that. Then, she goes to N.Y. and becomes a model. Does she recover from all the years of hearing she's too tall or not good enough in an instant, no, of course not. That takes work.
I don't believe people who are ugly have a higher self-esteem. I do believe maybe a parent gave them some confidence and said your looks don't matter. Overall, most people who are ugly have gotten teased or told to their face something about their looks. It is all how we internalize what we hear.

Self perception is important but most of the time it is based on other´s. "I think im cute" that personal thinking is caused not by objectivy but emotions and feelings.
We shouldnt generalize "every ugly person is....", but there is a compensation if you look at actors and big "stars" that do movies etc...and you ask people what they think about them few will people will say well they are smart or intelligent they will say what they see.
We need to define whats ugly or who is ugly because for God everyone is beautiful.

I think how a person perceives themselves is based on their attitude about themselves.
I don't think all "ugly" people have higher self esteem but average looking people do seem to have confidence to go on with their life despite what people think. That confidence comes with age, just like "ugly" does.

I know what you mean!!!!!
The old saying is "it's all about what's inside"
I have a friend that's over weight and I sort of admire how she doesn't let it stop here persuing anything... when it come to men you would think she was a super model... I think how we were treated as children has a lot to do with how we feel about ourselves... my friend was an only child and always go what she wanted... i am sure this has a lot to do with how she is now...
myself... I have always been sort of middle of the road on the image I have of myself... but i have found as I get older I see who i truly am and the confidence grows with age...

I dunno. I am not beautiful neither do I look that bad. I knew this real good looking girl who'd tell everybody who would listen that she were ugly. But I am positive it was just a front and she enjoyed watching all the guys getting turned on and trying to persuad her that she wasn't so ugly.

that would depend on your perception of *beautiful* and *ugly*people. some people you might think are ugly, look beautiful to someone else. or we can argue the meaning of *truly* beautiful, and *truly* ugly. ugly people are beautiful inside, and vise versa.
