Yes. Before we knew they were illegal . . and, basically they are illegal because it is considered gambling. The government frowns on it because so much taxable money can exchange hands and they have no way of tracking it. Pyramid schemes will be shut down and participants heavily fined.

But, in my experience, they do work. Over twenty years ago we had a pyramid sweep through our area. It was called the 'Circle of Gold' and everyone I know received substantial amounts of money. The idea was to invest $100 to start up. You than found two people who would give you $50 each in order to recoup the initial $100. Your name and theirs would be on a list of about 12 people. They would than go out and find two people in order to get their $100 back. No one really ever lost any money other than maybe the $50. If you sold the 'list' to two people you always got back in money you invested. It did work. We made around $8000 before the state decided that this was not legal. Plus, some people had started to get greedy and were having $1000 exchanges instead of the $100.

So, it works, but I would not recommend starting one. It is no longer legal and when you get shut down the police can trace your name through the start up lists.

It is much better and far more rewarding, however, to just go out and do an honest days work and receive an honest days pay.

"Example of specifications for pyramid scheme (Circle of Gold).
s$50q2x$50n12 = send $50 to top name, sell two copies for $50 each (implies you have bought your copy for $50 also), 12 tier list of names "

They are a wast of time in my opinion. I have joined one mention no names. The training was good mind you but the fact you have to put the money in then use your time and effort to make it work is not easy. I started with nothing borrowed the money. When i wanted help from people more higher up in the pyramid they were not supportive. I would suggest if you can think of something you would like to do and go for it alone or join up with friends even advertise

pyramid schemes are illegal because there is no product exchanged for money. There are plenty of Multi Level Marketing opportunities that do work. I am making over 700 dollars a month from mine, and the government can track it and it is in good graces with the Better Business Bureau you can go to www.automaticbuilder.com/13652

Don't waste time. Most are scams. How the scheme work out is that new members will pay for old members. Please don't fall for that. There is nothing easy in life.

One of the more popular scam works out this way.

1) Guaranteed payout of 40% investment per week.

E.g. If you deposit $10 you will get $4 back in the first week. Meaning in 4 weeks you will get returns of 160% and 60% profit. It sounds really too good to be true.

2) Next you get greedy and invest $100. You also get back $160 and $60 profit.

3) Then you get more greedy and invest $1,000. Then nothing is paid out and nothing heard. You might wonder why they have been able to pay profits of small amounts...that's because there are always greedy jokers out there.

Pyramid scheme businesses are illegal, so why would you want to know the start-up cost? Yes, I've known people involved in that and they are in trouble now.

start up cost are different from one to the other... i have seen success but i have never seen it last long... it is rare for some to stay with it as a life time career... i would name some of them but for my part here is to tell people to stay away from them... the money you put up front is distributed through out the pyramid... so to keep it going.... for the ones on top to make money the ones one the bottom are to keep recruiting... it should be illegal worldwide
