Read books definitely and learn how to use all the pieces.

Read the rules.

Oh and just to be nice... here:

Pawn: On first move can move 2 spaces. Otherwise 1 space and can attack only moving 1 space diagonally.

Knight: Up 2 spaces and over 1, or Up 1 space and over 2. (Makes the shape of an "L") Also, this is the only piece that can jump pieces.

Bishop: Has to stay on it's colour and can only move diagonally.

Rook: Can move horizantally and vertical only, and cannot jump pieces.

Queen: Never forget this lovely piece, she can move horizantilly, diagonally, AND vertically, but cannot jump pieces.

King: Protect your King always, it is very powerful, but can only move 1 space, its can move like the queen (any direction) but can only move 1 space.

And that's all.

It also helps to have what one of my uncles considered a "military mind." The pieces used in the game are sometimes modeled on the ancient military forces of various countries.

defnitely read books. read one on openings, another on tactics, and another on checkmate patterns. then practice with the newly learned knowledge along the way. it's a lot of work. OR you could just have an iq of 180+, then u'd be good.
