Stop the conversation and tell them its been a nice visit, but you have other things to attend to right now. Ask them if they need a ride home, or in some way, direct the focus of the conversation on their departure. Stand by the door, with their coat, hat and/or boots and wish them a safe trip home. If they don't get the message, be frank and say, "Look, you really need to leave now, please".

Well you could always give them the I have something to do nut it was nice seeing you talk and let them out of your house or you could just ask them to leave nicely. But if they refuse then I think you might want to change it up abit.

Remember it is your house - tell them when it is time to leave. Be blunt if all else fails. My husbands friends used to do that until I told them straight up how it was.

walk them to their car, or the bus, or the station, whatever - that way they're not alone.
