not required. malaria is a rare disease in kerala. as for chikungunya, just be careful with mosquitoes and live in clean hotels, free from them. the disease is dying down now. avoid allepey district if possible.
kerala is a safe place, and cleanest of all states in india. just be careful from the usual stuff, and malaria tablets are available all over in kerala, it has a good medical system.

Try to put off for a month or so since currently there are a number of cases of Chikungunya being reported there. Or else take Full Sleeved clothing,Mosquito Nets , a Mosquito Bite prevention Cream (like In India , we have Odomos ) , Mosquito Mats or Liquid based Mosquito repellents . You can get them locally too . My understanding is that Self medication in case of Malaria and Dengue is not advisable ; but yes keep a few Tablets for Fever .
Still better contact your Country's Consulate or Embassy in India . Or contact Kerela Tourism Department .

Contrary to the other person's view I think malaria is generally accepted as being life threatening and quite a few British travellers catch it on holiday every year. Isn't that what Cheryl Cole had and she spent weeks in hospital. I do agree with the rest of the advice about avoiding insect bites but what about taking some tablets with you and taking them when you are in the areas with the highest risk? That would be a sort of compromise between being totally unprotected and at least planning for the worst case scenario.

You take the following:
1. Malaria Tablets
2. Mosquito Nets
3. Mosquito Repellants.
4. All out liquid with dispensor
5. Mosquito coils.
6. Mosquito Mats- to be burnt and smoke
the entire living room after closing the
windows for 25 minutes, to see that they
are dead.
After you have smoked the room, then
you may opt for any of the above suggestions.
Tablets can be carried for precautionary measures.

I guess you are travelling from the west to Kerala. Malaria is not widespread. On the otherhand, there is a new disease (viral infection) spread through mosquitoes called "chingunguniya" (I am not sure about the spelling of this disease) that is affecting southern states like Kerala and Tamilnadu and "dengue" fever also spread by mosquitoes affecting northern states. Monsoon season is up on now and it is better to avoid travel now. Kerala is better in hygiene than other states.

theres is no need to carry malaria pills, unless insted you stay in a good resort /hotel,with clean rooms.there is no source to reveal or prove that kerala is infected with such diseases.but if you r so keen, you can avoid travelling to kerala for the next tow months,to be in a most safer side
