Actually the common white lily was traditionally used for funerals because of the strong scent, ie. to mask the odour of the deceased.
It is mostly a case of not caring for funerals or anything that reminds one of them, so many people don't 'like' them.
Many beautiful Asian lilies of various colours are now available, and the common orange day lilies and wild varieties are also quite beautiful.

They are one of my favourites, but you have to be careful of their pollen it stains and one type of lily really stinks!
