try using CLR or Lime Away

Apparantly you use a dry cloth and place over stain then a hot iron. On slate i cant see it comping out completely though. Try it and see if it works if not fully out then use a furniture wax and polish the complete fire place and buff then coat with olive oil and wipe clean. This should give you a nice finish that is regular all over and it will dull back to pre damaged condition in couple of weeks.

i clean for a part time job at night and i just had to do it to a tile floor we had a buch of black marks on it so my boss gave me some stuff called goof off i don't know where you get or anything like that but all you do it pour some on a paper towel and rub it, it comes right off

"CLR" Soak it several times and keep it wet before scrubbing of the Salts.

The once a day Shower Sprays work pretty good too done repeatedly.

Try rubbing alcohol and buff it.
