This is my first pregnancy and I don't really know yet what to expect at the doctor visits. I know next time I will get to listen to the heart beat. I am 11 weeks right now. I will be 20 weeks around Christmas and would really like to know before then as my family will come to see me during that time.

My insurance only offered ONE ultrasound. The rest would be charged extra. I would wait until after you are 20 weeks to make it more likly that the gender is correct if I were you. I waited until 24 weeks actually. I have heard that you can go in to the ER (cheating the insurance company) and see if you are having a boy or girl just by saying you haven't felt the baby move for a day or two. I don't know what you're insurance company offers or if you'd be willing to cheat the system--but if I were you I'd just make it a new year suprise instead of Christmas. I'd also call my insurance company and see how many ultra sound they allow--that way if it's like three you could take one before Christmas and then to reassure myself later I'd get another. Best of luck and congrats!

You will be told about your quad testing about week 15. You choose to either do this test or pass. Whether you pass or do the test makes no difference, its followed up by an ultrasound.

If you dont do the test they tend to want to do the ultrasound at about 16 weeks instead of 18-20.

I passed on the quad screening test (we always get a false positive on the spina bifida and down syndrom parts, and its torture) and because of that they wanted to do the ultrasound at 17 weeks. By the time i was able to get in I was already almost 20.

20 weeks is an excellent time to find out, you get the best reading. But they can usually tell pretty well by 16 weeks.

Just ask your doctor, tell him your reasoning for wanting to know before christmas.

You can also pay out of pocket for one of those special 4d ultrasounds, theyre considered a medical novalty still and most hospitals let you just call in and request one.

If you have a regular OB, more than likely your ultrasound will be around 20 weeks. And they will tell you then if you want to know. (as long as your little one cooperates)
If you have an OB doctor and get an ultrasound every three weeks, they can begin to see the developoment of genitalia around 11-13 weeks. BUT it is still not very clear. My other son, i was told at 15 weeks. I had an appointment last week for this one, (13 weeks) and he said he doesnt see the beginnngs of a boy, but he will know for sure at 16 weeks.
BUT, i guess if you are way to anxious to wait until your 20th week, around week 16 you could go to the hospital and complain of abdominal pain. They will more than likely give you an ultrasound. Dont know if that's the best thing to do, but hey, figured i'd share!
Good luck!!

The doctor will more then likely scedule you an ultrasound around 20 weeks. Any time before that is risky because you may not be able to tell then gender. i wouldn't risk getting one before 20 weeks even though you want to surprise your family, you also want accurate results!! Good Luck

About 20 weeks. an ultrasound usually can tell you if the baby is positioned right. also am amino call tell you. but you should not have this done for this reason. it does have risks. i found this really cool web sight that I'm going to share with you. i have it in my favorites and its pretty helpful. its free and it will answer questions you might have during your pregnancy. It also gives you a week to week look on the progress your unborn child's development. I hope this sight will bring you more up to date on whats going on with you and your body.

they do normally tell you at the 20 weeks scan but remember not always 100% and sometimes the little baby does not co-operate at my 20 weekk scan i asked and they were only 75% sure it was a boy so i paid privately to be certain and it was a boy and when you go privately i thin k from around 16 weeks they can tell you the gender it was only about £75 but well worth it cause you getmore pics and its so exciting! so congrats and i hope you can find out xxxx

20 weeks and after is the best time to find out the sex. I have known people who have found out at 16 weeks, and I found out at 18 weeks with my 2nd baby. The earlier you find out, the higher chance of being told the wrong gender.

It depends really some places will do it as early as 20 weeks, some dont find out until 28 or 32 weeks.....both sisters have recently been pregnant and or given birth, one found out last week at 32 weeks, the younger one found out at 28 weeks......

You can ask your doc but more than likely they will wait until the normal 20 week ultrasound as that is when they can tell the most.
