I plugged in a mouse while the PC was running and fried my power supply and possibly my motherboard. I thought it was just the power supply so I put in a new one and now when i turn on power the fan for the CPU comes on for a few seconds and then goes off then back on for less than a second and off again (repeating).

so is the motherboard fried too or what? any suggestions?

There is a disfunction in one of your vital computer components such as VGA card, processor, power supply, mobo, RAM etc.

In this case, I think I'll vote for the power supply error. I think you should diagnose it first.

My prediction : The power supply is supplying less power due to the error. Then it triggers the errors in harddisk and other vital components.

Hope it helps

Are you using a USB mouse? if so, make sure the internal usb contact pins arent bent and shorting to ground,,,this will take the 5 volt line directly to ground!! Ive seen numerous laptops have this problem! Rebend the pins with the power unhooked, make sure they dont touch ground or each other!

something similar happened to me but it was not the motherboard , it was just the internal power source
