First of all think about this. If your hamster got sick or was injured would you take it to the vet? If not I wouldn't recomend getting any animal. No pet sould be a "throw-away" pet.
If so ask if you have the money saved for am emergency vet visit. Also don't forget the cage I personally wouldn't recomend getting a cage smaller than 24"L x 12"W x 12"H. Hamsters are very active and need space to move also make sure the bar spacing is at most 1/2" x 1/2" otherwise they'd be able to squeez through probably. Next on the list would be bedding. I use a product called Care Fresh that is great and comes in a verity of colors. I would NOT EVER use Ceder or Pine wood shavings! They produce a lot of dust and that can lead to respitory problems. If you go with shavings I'd say go with Aspen. Most improtantly DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!! there are plenty reputable books and websites. I've looked up a few for you. Lastly research the place you're getting your new hamster. Some pet stores don't look into their health, I'd say unless they garuntee the animals health don't buy! Also make sure the emplyees are educated on proper care, if not would you really want to be getting an animal from a place that would allow they to be treated like that?

i would get a gerbil instead of a hamster. they go to the bathroom less so you don't have to clean they're cage quite as much. everybody pretty much covered what to put in their cage and what they need.

Also, save your paper towel and toilet paper rolls. They LOVE to chew on them and it's free entertainment for the hamster.
