Not that this is entirely a gender issue (some men like soaps, some women like sports), but here is my opinion.
Men enjoy watching sports on television, football, baseball, and basketball (among others). Following sports statistics, players, and playoff games can become a generational thing. Fathers and sons and grandfathers will all pile together to watch or talk about sports. Games from 20 years ago are still discussed among those knowledgable. In the work place or in a bar men will often congregate and the thing that they have most in common is watching and talking about sports!
So, what does this have to do with soap shows? Well, with females it is a similar experience. Soap shows are being watched by mothers, daughters, and grandmothers. The characters on the shows seem to remain there forever. Some soaps have been around for 20 years and bridge a generational gap. Whenever females gather in the workplace, bar, or at play you can almost always find someone who watch a soap. Soaps are not taken seriously. They are mindless fun that seems to connect women together in a social situation, very much like the social interations seen when men get together to discuss their favorite sports.
Both sports and soaps seem like harmless passtimes to me. And, if they get people together and talking . . that is probably a good thing . . as long as it isn't taken seriously.

people are basically bored with their own lives. They like to watch other people have drama.
