In modern times they basically don't. However, traditionally the letters in a telegram were transmitted as electronic pulses. Typically short and long pulses formed letters in Morse code. These were most often transmitted over wires, but could also be sent via radio waves. Once received an operator would decode the message, which was typically printed on a yellow paper tape that was affixed to a yellow-colored form. These were usually delivered directly to their recipients via messengers.

Today the technology is largely obsolete, as the same messages can be delivered more efficiently and cheaply by phone, fax, or e-mail. Companies that formerly provided telegram service mostly conduct their business today via the internet.
