I want to know which is the correct spelling; window sill or window cill? This is not a test, just that I have seen it spelt in both ways, and wondered if there is a different spelling purely for carpentry terms?

Spelling is fashion. The way words are spelled (spelt) changes with time. So, in the way a certain hairstyle is not 'wrong', just out of fashion, certain spellings are not wrong. 'Cill' is a perfecty sensible way to spell the word; who knows but it might become the standard way a few years from now?

Dictionaries generally record current usage, in terms of meaning and spelling of words. But they are influenced also by past usage which might now be disappearing. So, in a sense, there is no right or wrong in spelling, just sensible and ridiculous. Neither 'sill' nor 'cill' is ridiculous.

I would venture that as cill is used by the architects, it will be an original spelling, and sill will be a popular spelling which has gradually taken over. Both can be used.

Well Spellings are different in England, America and other English speaking countries. I know for a fact that in England the correct spelling is "window sill." The word "window cill" does not exist in the English language. It may be an American spelling.

I had never seen the 'cill' variant until your question. I wasn't prepared to call your source a poor speller until I checked. Oxford Concise shows 'cill' as a variant of 'sill' but the Merriam Webster doesn't even mention it. I suspect your source has better than "A" levels. Stick with the 'sill' spelling and us colonials will understand what you mean.
