God works THROUGH human beings; of course, God can directly direct one's path, but prudence dictates that one should seek human counsel as well for many, thinking they have been directed by God, have erred and committed heinous crimes. So, for Christians and many other religious persons, recourse is to be had within the community of believers for validation of one's interior inspirations. For a Catholic Christian, private revelation does not supercede the deposit of Faith.

God's direction from within us comes from the Holy Spirit. We also have His guidance that was written by human hands but God inspired called the Bible. You may pray also and ask God or Jesus Christ for answers and They will reveal themselves in Their own timing either way. By the way, God always answers prayer, sometimes the answer is just not what we want to hear.

I believe the soul journey requires "both".
Every master (Jesus Christ, Buddah, Confucious, Mohammed to name a few) was at some point a child and was taught in the learning of their ancestry.
Followed by a period that led to them reaching an enlightened state where they themselves became the teachers, and could more closely follow God by their inner directions than by anything read in a book.
My own experiences are similar, though I wouldn't claim to be anywhere near a master (*yet*). I learned as a child and still read for learning, but much of my path as an adult has been led by God. (So far a good path for the most part with rough patches that have taught me a lot, but overall no complaints.)

Yes I believe that God can direct our paths from within each of us. I don't know that we need teachers, but we do need to expand out mind and explore the way others think. To think we know it all is incredibly arrogant. Life is about learning, and with God directing our path, we will prevail.

Hindu scriptures say "gurur brahma, Gurur Vishnu, Guru Devo maheshwaraha. Guru sakshat para brahma tasmai shri guruvey namah" Meaning teache is equal to God. Without teacher God cannot be found. This was said by saint Kabir in Hindi
"Guru Govind dovoo Khade Kako laago pai
Balihaari guru aapaney Govind dio batai"
meaning if god and Guru came to gether who will you prostrate first. kabir says prostrate to The Guru (teacher) first as you have found god by his guidance alone.
Inward guidance will come from god when we pray to him but how to pray and what to pray is taught by tyhe Teacher.

I believe one can do it on it's own, but an encouraging push could help you choose the best direction to go in. Only you can decide whether you want to follow god or not, so it's really based on how you feel and who you want to worship.

3 ways i believe God speaks to us.
1. God speaks to us in his Word. The Bible.
2. God speaks to us our spirit.Through dreams and visions (Revelation)
3. God speaks to us through Godly counsel. (by sending someone to confirm what we already read in the word and revealed in our hearts. Godly counsel should always come as a confirmation and not as an initial voice

We choose our path before we come into this world and then along the way people come into our life for us to learn lessons that we r to learn. So the answer is both.

being we were created with freedom of choice,he can only guide those that are willing to be guided, his power concerning us is limited,do to the fact not all of us are willing to accept god,and are steady pondering the never ending questions,of why are we here, and where is god?answers,he's here always, and we're here because he wants it that way.
