I think this might help solve ur question...
Points and Levels
To encourage participation and reward great answers, Yahoo! Answers has a system of points and levels. The number of points you get depends on the specific action you take. The points table below summarizes the point values for different actions. While you can't use points to buy or redeem anything, they do allow everyone to recognize how active and helpful you've been. (And they give you another excuse to brag to your friends.)
Points Table Action Points

Have your answer selected as the best answer 10
Receive a "thumbs-up" rating on a best answer that you wrote (up to 50 thumbs-up are counted) 1 per "thumbs-up"
Levels are another way to keep track of how active you (and others) have been. The more points you accumulate, the higher your level. Yahoo! Answers recognizes your level achievements with our special brand of thank you's!
And finally, as you attain higher levels, you'll also be able to contribute more to Yahoo! Answers - you can ask, answer, vote and rate more frequently.

It is very useful. For example if we want any information regarding any subject we can pose a question and many people in need of points in yahoo answers will answer the question. So we obtain the required information without any need of searching many books.

It's yahoos way of encouraging you to come back to yahoo. They receive more hits to the site which makes them more 'popular'. Just a marketing technique. Otherwise useless.

Exchange of knowledge is the primary concern!
Secondly the level also concerns -but just for our self satisfactions...
In my case ...I have answered 423 answers so far and I have the credit of being selected my 54 answers as BEST ANSWERS ...that itself is a credit for me...
What I can do out is this....that I can show these credits to my wife and make her undersatnd the "knowledge of power" of mine and make her to dance to my tune and make my night (some time day)wishes to get materialised....!!! THAT IS ALL!!!

It just gives you more of an opportunity to do what it is you already do and allows for bragging rights.
Who knows, you may even top Richard (Current Top Gun on the leaderboard)

it improves you in levels so you can do more stuff on yahoo answers but if you don't like anwering questions then there is no point for someone to be on this unless they need help.
