... im an amd person myself so i cant really tell you ... all i can tell you is that in the real world you probably wont notice much difference between processors unless you do alot of cpu intensive tasks like video converting ... then i would say that you would probably get about the same speeds from the two processors as far as the time it takes to complete a single task ... the difference would most likely be that with a dual core processor you could still do other somewhat heavy tasks while it was working and not feel much of a bog down in speed .... also, the core duo would generate less heat most likely and be easier on the battery in a notebook application ...

I have a Core 2 duo E6600 overclocked from 2.4Ghz to 3.5Ghz using standard air cooling and could probably go further (if I dared).

I had been a AMD fan and was using a x2 4200 until I heard about this CPU and bought one the same day, along with a Gigabyte GA-965P-DQ6 motherboard.......and all I can say it is wow. The core 2 duo E6600 wipes the floor with AMD x2 4200 and at the present overclocked state, it is even faster than AMD flagship model.......the FX62. Nuff said, buy one....you won't regret it.

Wow it is rare to see 6 straight bad answers in a row. It is signifcantly faster, much newer and better architecture, and the dual cores help, Windows runs about 40 things at a time, hence the dual core will always be a help. Here are the benchmarks:http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html

a huge differance. although it might not seem alot. the p4 model you tell me about is a 3.4 ghz one, its only one core. yet the 2.4 ghz is a dual core one. so to get the real speed you need to times it by 2. so the 2.4ghz is actually a 4.8 ghz . also they are trying to phase pentium 4 out. so if buying a new pc. buy the dual core one.

Not that much faster.

There are very few applications ( programs, software ) written at the moment that can take advantage of these dual core processors.
The only 2 that I can think of are Adobe Photoshop and Corel Draw, obviously they have to be the latest versions as well that have been recompiled to take advantage.
