the order-taker then proceeds to ask me

"Do you want mustard on your hot dog?"
"Do you want relish on your hot dog"

are they f'ing retarded? I just said that I wanted only ketchup and chopped onions on my hot dog!

And the same thing happens when I order a hero sandwich over the phone or out somewhere.

because you don't have to be a rocket scientist to work at a fast food restaurant. you don't have to be smart, you don't have to be clean, you don't have to listen, you don't have to be polite....

Let me just say that for years I have worked in the restaurant/fast food/etc. business. For example, You do not know the number of times I asked "everything on that OK??" (at the growing franchise store Quizno's, where everything that is on the sandwich is on the menu over-head they've been staring at the last 10 minutes.) The person says "yes", then watched me make the sandwich. Not more than 2 seconds later, it's "OH! No no no! I don't want tomatoes or mayo, sorry about that."

And for everyone saying that people that work in fast food places or restaurants are stupid, I highly wish you to take a closer look. Maybe some workers are punk teenagers looking for their first job and don't care. But other people are trying to work around difficult circumstances and working maybe 2 or 3 jobs just trying to get by.

But regardless, repetition makes the customer hear that what they ordered was correct, and increases the chances that instead of giving you a hot dog with only ketchup and onions, you don't receive a hot dog sans ketchup and onions. Work behind any job for a few days, and you give a little more thought into your accusations.

The same thing happens when I eat at a Subway. I tell them what I want on my sub and they still ask what I want on my sub.

Yeah and it probably is the ketchup thing on the hotdog that knocks them for a loop. Some think it is a crime to put ketchup on a hot dog. I like ketchup on mine with mustard and onions. If I don't have the onions then I just eat it with ketchup.

they're making sure you don't want anything else and the more you ask to put on the hot dog the more they charge you and the more they make. You could avoid this by saying, "I want ketchup and onions on my hot dog. No relish no mustard just ketchup and onions.

Maybe they are sensing some abiguity deep within your soul.

Maybe you should come back with a Jerry Seinfeld-like answer:

"Why yes. When I said I wanted only ketchup and onions on my hot dog, I REALLY meant that I wanted mustard and relish too!"

they are just so used to asking if you want mustard and relish that they automatically asked it even though they knew that you only wanted ketchup and onions. Either that, or they simply dont understand what ONLY ketchup and onions means!! It is frustrating, once I ordered a hamburger delux with NO mustard and got one with ONLY mustard and nothing else....

For one, calm down. Its just a hot dog.

Secondly, yes, there are many dumb people in the fast food industry. Trust me, I work with several of them. I am a manager. I am not "f*ing retarded," I am paying my way through college.

Most of the time it is just habit! If you ask the same question to every single person, 9 hours a day, 5 days a week, sometimes it just comes out without realizing it no matter what they have ordered. Also, it may be in what is called their "script." For example we have to ask if they want their food in a combo, or if they want their items large sized. We are just doing what the company wants us to do.

Go easy on em, they are just doing their job.

Remember they are sometimes "just dumb people" taking your order. Other reasons might be the coding on the register.
Basically, it's dumbness. After all those questions, they mess up the order anyway. It's like everytime I tell them "NO KETCHUP" and they proceed to ask about everything else and then serve me a hot dog with Ketchup.

I hate that. I really don't like onions and it seems like everytime I order something they get it wrong. I find the best way to get a hotdog with only ketchup is to order it plain then add your own ketchup.

the workers are so programmed that any preferences just throw their thought process totally off. Once, I ordered a cheeseburger at McD's with extra onions. when I got home, there were lots of extra onions, but NO burger in the bun....OMG!

it's the ketchup part. Who eats ketchup on a dog?

If somebody says they want 'soup' on their burger, you'd probably tune out the rest of the order.
