Mine is Great Expectations by Charles Dickens.
The extremely spooky character of Miss Faversham gave me gooseflesh not to mention the marshes, the fog and the prison hulks.
A real rattling yarn with a good scare factor.

Les Miserables - Victor Hugo.
It has history, romance, social comment. It's not just the main characters story but the story of a lot of characters. It can also tell you something about yourself.

Dickens was one of my favorites also. After I read most of the classics I got into different types of cultural books/authors. At this stage in my life I would have to say that the most interesting and yes it's considered a "classic" in many circles--is the novel "Black Elk Speaks" by John G. Neihardt. Black Elk was a holy medicine man of the Sioux tribe. It tells his life story, and many of the visions that he had. It deals with man's social ethics and responsibilities, although he was Native American his wisdom permeates all creeds and you'll walk away in awe! Enjoy cuz I don't think you will have read anything equal.

I really like David Copperfield...it is ultimately about second chances, and the choices and results of those who choose wisely vs those who choose poorly...Simple good vs. evil, but with enough drama and humanity to keep it interesting...and cathartic.
I Love Dickens!
