Theres really nothing quite like Harry Potter. But you might want to try the 'The Hobbit' followed but its sequel the 'Lord of The Rings' Trilogy. Oh and the "Color of Magic" series by Terry Pratchett is awesome, but probably best for young adult readers rather than children. It takes a look at the lighter side of witches and wizards. Perhaps some Roald Dahl. If its for a very young reader try the fairy series of books by Daisy Meadows.

Mark J....you beat me to it, I was going to suggest Pterry :O)
Terry Pratchett writes comedic satyrical fantasy, and he has some young reader books...the newer ones are about little blue people called the Wee Free Men, his discworld novels all take place on the Discworld or in Death's house. These are excellent for all ages...I would definitely recommend you reading those.
I don't know how old you are hon, but if you like the HP books you may also like Marion Zimmer Bradley, she writes in the time of Merlin.
if you are an older teenager, you might like Anne Rice's Witches chronicles like The Witching Hour and Lasher and Merrick, these about about a family of witches.
You might also like Neil Gaiman's books.
That should be enough to get you going.
You can look up the authors on www.amazon.com and read some of the reviews before deciding what you want to read.
The other responders' suggestions of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia are excellent too...and if you read those, then you will definitely start seeing some similarities and connections in Rowling's writings.
Happy reading :o)

The trilogy by Phillip Pullman, usually referred to as "His Dark Materials" has a lot of similar things in it. It's for teenagers and adults, though--not for elementary school kids. The three books are "The Golden Compass" "The Subtle Knife" and "The Amber Spyglass."

A film based on the first book is supposedly being written now.

I absolutely love Diana Wynne Jones. She's incredible. The only book of hers I didn't particularly like was Howl's Moving Castle, because Howl was such a jerk, but the movie was fun.
Also, there's a book called Javakosh which you might like.
