go used for your first board. i did. at most snowboard shops you can get used board and bindings for around 100 bucks. see if they have any used burton boards. the reason you get a used board at first is if for some reason you dont like snowboarding(even though you probably will) you havent spent that much money on something you dont enjoy. if you do enjoy snowboarding though(you probably will) then get a new board after the used one.

Definitely rent first time out - you'll progress pretty fast if you are just starting out and the kind of board you want to ride when you are an absolute beginner is very different from what you'll want once you have a couple of weeks under your belt. You can get really cheap rental if you book in advance over the internet somewhere like this: http://www.snowrental.net/

Once you've been boarding for a few weeks go and chat to some people at a decent snowboard store (Ellis Brigham and Snow and Rock are the biggest in the UK, though there are lots of good independents too). They'll talk you through the kind of riding you like to do, how good you are and suggest a board/bindings/boots set up that'll suit you. You can even demo a few boards at one of the indoor real snow slopes like Xscape in Milton Keynes or Castleford.

Pretty much most boards are the same if your just starting out. www.the-house.com has one of the best selections of Boards and equipment. I tested out the K2 mini zeppelin and I loved it, it was lightweight and very flexible, you can find one for under $200.00. For bindings well the selection is literally endless. About 2 years ago Burton came out with a new binding with a toe strap/mask to reduce stress on the foot, and now most brand name companies also provide theses toe straps, but they are a little more pricier, but I think there worth it. Like I said earlier though most boards are relatively the same in riding so go for a cheaper ($2- $300) board, and once you've gained experience try testing some snowboards cause most resorts offer testing of new brand name boards for under $20.

Rent a board for at least your first holiday. The reason for that is that beginners need a larger and stiffer board to start with, and then as you get better you will want something smaller and more flexible. If you buy a board now you will want to change it after 1 or 2 seasons and it will be a waste. All the boards you can rent will be ideal for learners to start on and pick up the necessary skills. Have fun!!
