the article i'm translating is called Post Modernism: Adventures in etiquette. it has some connection to religion. the paragraph is about a book called "Etiquette". so, the sentence is - "Similarly, she will instruct you on correct demeanor in varoius types of temple, mosque, and church, and she lists appropriate greetings for assorted holy days, [starting from here i can't understand] yet she fails to discourage the devout from thrusting unwanted doctrine down the ears of a guest. A paying guest, on this occasion."

"she" is not discouraging someone who is devoted to their religion from preaching their religion to a paying guest who doesn't want to hear it.

It means she doesn't discourage (ie dissuade or tell them not to) the people who are really into the religion (ie really stick to it) against telling the guests all the things they dont really need to hear or want to hear from the holy book whether it be the Bible or another holy text. Not so much this, it also means that the 'devout' are bombarding the guests with holy information and preachings, you know? They are going too over the top with the giving out of the information, it is too much and the guests could be doing without it.
This is what I think it means anyway, I'm pretty sure anyway.

It means she is a hypocrite. She talks of etiquette then allows strong believers to thrust their beliefs down the throat of a guest, when surely this is not very polite.

She didn't tell the worshippers (believers) that they should not try to tell guests what to believe.
ya know. The meaning is.......the religious believers are trying to get people to follow their religion too, by telling them their beliefs and rules, and SHE hasn't told them to stop doing that.
The implication is that its rude to try to convert guests. But SHE does not seem to notice that, so she just lets the believers keep trying to convert people.
