You will need to have the manuscript accepted by a literary agent. Few publishers will deal directly with authors. Literary agents can be extremely hard to acquire - many will not accept unsolicited manuscripts.
Start with the 'Writers and Artists Yearbook' and prepare your manuscript in a format that will have a chance of being accepted by an agent. You will need a good blurb, an excellent synopsis and lots of stamps.
This is not an easy thing to do, so be prepared for a struggle. Even if your manuscript is good a publisher may only agree to proceed with a multiple book deal where they get one full book and a synopsis of the second. Single-book authors are a high risk.

First look for a literary agent to represent you. Most are in New York City. When you look for an agent, you need to find one that works with writers of western novels. Try writer's digest. You could send it directly to small publishers, big publishers only do business with agents, and see what they say. Word of advice, nevertheless, it's a waiting game filled with disappointments. Usually, you'll have to send them the first chapter and a query letter outling each chapter in the proposed book.

Get a gang together and hold up a Publishing House. Take hostages if you have to.
