Been there and done that...

Sounds like an iron problem in your water supply. Do you have a similar ring in the toilet bowl or in the tank? You will likely need to filter the iron from the water before it reaches the bathtub. A water softener can remove small amounts of iron from the water if supplied with the proper type regenerating salt. Alternately Iron Out (http://www.ironout.com) can be used to remove the rust stains and can be put in the water softener as well.

Well, my bathtub did the same thing.. I belive its just rust, so try using like some kind of rust remover, if not use bleach i know its only temporary but if u want to keep applying it then it would work. If that doesnt work then I would buy a new tub! Or there is KABOOM and that works to.. you can get it at walmart really cheap

Search for more info on this site http://www.upkb.com/cloroxpen.php and use the broad scrubber of Clorox Pen sample. Apply more solution and scrub harder. Just don't forget to rinse thoroughly as you wipe the tub dry with a cloth. It will take some time, maybe a day or two.

Magic Eraser.

Depending on the age of your tub, your enamel finish could be wearing off. There are companies that refinish them, if you are terribly attached to your tub, otherwise buy a new one.
