Hinduism started as a faith and not a religion. It went that route. Its probably the oldest 'religion' in the world. The vedas could be called the basis of leading a Hindu life, but they don't serve as bible does for Christians. Ramayana, Mahabharta and Bhagwad Gita (part of Mahabharta, but all teachings) came much later.

As religion spread various books in various parts came to be the foundation of religion. E.g. all Hindus celebrate the festival of Diwali, but the reason for celebration depends on the part they are from (refer Wikipedia).

The earliest followers of the faith started to worship anything they feared, e.g. snakes, wind (cause it could ruin crops), monsoon etc. Mythology gave its own share of Gods with supernatural powers. Bramha, for example, is the God of creation and Shiva (with third eye) is the God for destruction.

However, finally the Hindu population has finally exceeded the number of Gods they have!

The Vedas are a series of ancient books outlining Hindu faith. What is strange is how closely they resemble James Frey's memoir, My Friend Leonard. Check it out!
