"Ignore the obviously American right-wing, uncharitable and biased responses to your question. You made a mistake, and now desire to live a respectable life and are entitled to your chance to do so"

I agree with this response.

I feel for you, if you really want to make a go of it and your past mistakes are hampering your progress, it's a shame.

You broke the law and were convicted and undoubtably punished for the offence, giving the responses on here it would be fair to say you are being punished all over again.

What I would say to you is start at the bottom, work hard and really throw yourself in to a job, such as kitchen work or bar work and PROVE to the company/manager that you are turning your life around, work your way up the ladder.

As for the people that want to pull you down all the time, they probably engage in corrupt and illegal activities just as much as what you were doing but cause they haven't been caught they feel the need to put the spotlight on someone else, this being you.

Good luck with it mate, xxx

If people will not give you a job because of a conviction this is not discrimination but a reasonable reason for a refusal. You had the choice not to get the conviction. If it's causing you problems the least you can do is take responsibility for those problems instead of trying to blame other people.

Employers are wary of hiring anyone with a criminal record. It is the hardest thing in the world to win back trust.
Have you thought of doing volunteer work? If you have had a probation officer, then go and see him or her, or social services and they can point you in the right direction.
There are plenty of youngsters heading for the wrong path, and if you help some of them in the right direction by even speaking about your own experience, it will stand you in good stead. That is one suggestion anyway, there may be other things you could do.
Good luck to you, don't give up!

if you have been convicted , it goes against you period... people want to blame others or conditions for their behavior, the best indicator of future behavior is the measure of past behavior... choices you made that led you down the wrong road before most likely will lead you there again... just reality, they will see you as a liability, not an asset... sorry, but you should have thought about that before you did the crime, just like my sis-in-law the recovered heroin addict...yeah right... she has ODed more since she recovered than when she was a regular.... hope you can make a positive turn, but it will be a long ride for you, maybe you can get an expungemnet and have it removed from your record.

How long ago was your conviction?

Is it 'spent'.

If it is spent, then you do not have to declare it.

I asked my brother in-law, a former Chief Constable, this question on your behalf and this was his advice.

Ignore the obviously American right-wing, uncharitable and biased responses to your question. You made a mistake, and now desire to live a respectable life and are entitled to your chance to do so.

Good luck.

If it's not a felony, you don't have to tell them about it.

If your conviction is for anything other than rape or child molestation than I would say that you're definately being discriminated against and should look for legal help.

If your conviction is for rape or child molestation, tough ****.
You're scum and you don't deserve a job.

if companys have a choice between someone with a conviction and someone without, which do you think they are going to go for? They want employees that they dont have to worry about if they dont need too, e.g being able to trust them.

Rue the day you decided to break the law and victimize another citizen. This is the price criminals pay for their behavior. you could always move to the west and pick tomatos. Maybe sell timeshares. Dont blame society for your mistakes.
