This is 2 questions.

Of course the monarchy should be abolished once the queen comes to the end of her reign.

No, they should not be allowed to 'sponge off' the taxpayer. This should come to an end immediately. Think of the new wife, with the millions she has already cost the state.

They have enormous wealth, sufficient to keep themselves in the style they so obviously enjoy.

Where are the 'billions' they are supposed to generate in tourist income?

Dream on!

The same old tired arguments are trotted out again, both for and against.

Who would you rather have as head of state The Queen or Bush??

Who has the most manners in never criticising their critics?? The Queen or Blair

Who is the biggest tourist attraction?? The Queen or Gordon Brown. And so on

Quit carping on about the Monarchy and live with what a lot of others in the world would rather have as we have had for centuries. Political stability which is the envy of all the illegal immigrants!!!!

Yes the monarchy should be abolished and no they should not be allowed to sponge off taxpayers - although they do now pay tax as well as the rest of us. I am sure the time will come, although maybe not soon, and I hope they will go quietly as the Queen once promised, and that they will be allowed by the new government to go quietly, with dignity and without having their personal property and dignity taken away.

I don't know how many more times I can say that the Monarchy is an out-of-date institution, that contributes nothing to this country, symbolises everything that is wrong with our archaic, classist society, and costs the tax payer millions of ounds every year.

Yes, the Queen pays tax on the civil list, she does not however, pay tax on her private income (land ownership, stocks etc) which runs into hundreds of millions of pounds. The royal family also pay nominal rent on acres of land that would cost anyone else a fortune.

Are you sure the Queen works harder than the questioner? Really? What do you suppose she does for a living? The occasaional 'state visit' to another head of state where she will be pampered and showered with gifts does not consitute a career. Has she ever had to work 9-5 a day in her life? Like Hell she has.

Authority and wealth in the 21st century should be earned, not inherited. No one has power over me by their birth. I will never be a subject.

Off with her head, and then maybe Britain can be a real democracy!

Oh, and last time I checked it was not ignorant to have an opinion which differs from someone elses. Anyone who thinks that it is, is quite frankly, very ignorant.

Before you start criticizing the English, you might try learning to use their language correctly. The phrase you are looking for is 'sponge off'.
The answer to your question is no, they should not be abolished because they do not sponge off the tax payers. They generate revenue, which is the complete opposite of your conception. And that pretty much confirms to me that you are not British, and don't know enough about the situation to be making suggestions of this sort. In short -- butt out!

Sponge the taxpayers? You know that most of their revenues are from their own holdings, not public money, right? What they get taxpayer pennies for would be spent on whoever did it in their stead if they weren't there.

Of course, the windsors are usurpers and should be publicly drawn and quartered, but abolish the monarchy? why?

Royalty should not be abolished, None of the Royals sponge of the state unlike fit young men and women in this country who live on benefit and don't want to work, Included in the latter is the fit men and women claiming Incapacity Benefit and in full time casual work payed on a daily basis, or running their own business making thousands every week and claiming Housing Benefits and Council tax Rebates. These are the real spongers in our society and not as some would have our Royals/Politicians or migrant workers.

As an American I can't truly be objective , keep the monarchy , a tourist attraction to say the least. Sponge of tax payers ? well we do not have the monarchy but a prez who manages to start wars and bankrupt us. What choice would you take of the two?Oops I fergot Blair for a minute!

Did you know that the Queen and other Royals pay tax? So no way can you accuse them of sponging off tax payers! (I bet she pays more tax than you do.......)

People who are in favour of abolishing the monarchy.......Do you really realise how devastating this would be? If it actually happened the income of thousands who depend on overseas visitors and tourism in general would hit rock bottom overnight.

Likewise, the UK would suffer great loss without the royal family to make goodwill visits to other countries. They do a fantastic PR job, and they work damn hard at it.

Will you be still working in your 80s? Our Queen is!
They work, they pay tax - and minor royals have to find careers and support themselves, just like anyone else. Perhaps you didn't know this.

Think again before you knock the Queen, God bless her!
