There are many causative agents for sore throat. It maybe a bacteria or a virus. Virus are self limiting, there is no cure ... the antibiotic is to prevent any subsequent complication with bacteria.

I gargle with straight peroxide. It seems to give me some relief when I have a really bad sore throat. I take about 4 capfuls of peroxide, gargle, spit, then wait about 5 minutes before rinsing or drinking anything. You could also gargle with salt water. Take about 4 ounces (1/2 glass) of lukewarm water, mix in 1-2 teaspoons of salt, gargle spit and repeat until all the salt water is gone. Theres lozenges out there that help with just sore throats, Ricola and Leudens are pretty good at helping out. Take some Tylenol or Advil (as long as you aren't allergic), lay down, put either a warm towel or a cold towel (whichever feels better) directly on your throat, and relax. Avoid eating or drinking a lot of acidic or salty foods, like orange juice, potato chips, soda pops can actually irritate sore throats in some cases. Take a vitamin that has vitamin C in it. Actually, if it has vitamin C and E in it, it works better since you need E in order for C to be better absorbed and vice versa. I hope you feel better soon!

No they do not and far too many antibiotics are given for viral infections. If a culture ruled out strep, I would use warm saline gargles four times a day and a Tyelenol as needed.
