The "Journal and Courier" is the newspaper of Lafayette, Indiana.

The "Journal-Courier" is the paper in Louisville, KY.

Raleigh's paper is the "News and Observer". The online obituary page search, however, only goes as back as 10/21/2001.

The Wake County libraries have the whole archives of the News and Observer on microfiche - but that may not be useful to you if you aren't local.

As others have noted, you will generally not find a cause of death in an obituary or death notice. If the death was accidental or newsworthy, it may show up in a news column.

I don't think that the obit tells how your friend died, i think it would just say the date and where your friend died, like a hospital or at home. I think the dates only go back so far so you might want to contact the Journal and the Courier to find out how to find it.

Our obits don't tell how someone died. But the local library keeps copies of all of the newspapers. You an contact the newspaper company and see if they have a copy left from that date. They sometimes do. I am sorry for your loss. Good luck to you.

Most newspapers have archives that you can go back & search through for older obituaries. But most obituaries don't list the cause of death - it is probably best to check with old friends that had stayed in touch. It would be too sensitive to ask a family member. Realize you may hear several versions, though - I had a friend die & his family wanted a closed casket (they just couldn't bear the thought of seeing him dead) so rumours started he had shot himself in the head. Sad.

I don't think you can get copies of the death certificate or coroner's reports anymore because of the Privacy Act.

you'll have to ask someone that knows. Obits rarely tell WHY or HOW a person died.
