Well, it's pretty difficult and might make you look like an idiot if you try to tell the boss you're working hard when you're sitting around with nothing to do. Worse your boss might be insulted by implying that he is stupid enough to believe that you are working hard when you have nothing to do.

It's a cold hard fact. The workload usually cannot be divided and scheduled to keep everyone busy all the time. You are expected to deal with that and find something useful to do that doesn't involve anyone else, they may not have the extra time.

Bosses as a general rule don't want to hear about how hard you are working. They are more interested in what you are getting done.

I'd recommend that you use the slack time to keep yourself organized, including your work area. My job is similar in that most of the time I'm not working on anything that has to be done that day. But I know the type of work that will come in and have to be done right away and I prepare for that by doing whatever I can in advance. Fact is the better prepared you are the less time it takes to stay caught up, and the more time you have to prepare for the next job.

Its being efficient.

not knowing what you do it might be hard to tell exactly. but usually there is stuff at work we are supposed to do according to the rules but just ignore it because we are too busy (or lazy) to do it. and due to its trivial nature it goes unnoticed. if staying busy is your aim then finish up these minute tasks when you have time. if your boss is a good guy and notices it he'll probably be happy and see you as a better person, but be aware if he is a p$%^k, he might want you to do this stuff even when it is busy, which might not be always possible. and may backfire on you.

When your work is done, you need to seek out other work. Tell your boss, "I'm all caught up....do you have anything that you need help with"....or ask your co-workers the same thing. If noone is around to ask, find something to do. This is the way to get ahead and get promotions.

I direct over 200 employees and appreciate those who ask for additional work when they have none of their own. Employees who take the initiative are much more valuable than those who just try to look busy by finding non value added tasks to just "fill" their time. Ask to be cross trained in other areas to make yourself more valuable to your employer. The more you can do , the harder it is to let you go.

Be upfront and he / she will appreciate it.

DEPENDS ON WHAT TYPE OF WORK YOU DO, CAN YOU CLEAN UP YOUR AREA, OR MAYBE ASK TO HELP SOMEONE ELSE WITH THEIR WORK, YOU DON'T HAVE TO SIT IDLE IF YOU LOOK AROUND. GOOD LUCK!!! STAY BUSY.
