I have seen them eat frogs swimming and they have flopped themselves onshore to grab a frog and flop back!!! They are somewhat friendly and nibble on toes off the dock too. They are quite savvy to nets and fish hooks though..hard to catch 'em!

I would say that it was probably a form of bass. I personally have seen largemouths jump onto shore to grab at frogs and bugs. They definately look grumpy, and the size and colors are right. The largemouth bass has a row of dark splotches running along the lateral line all the way from head to tail, and can be anywhere from less than a centimeter at hatchling to about two feet and 25 lbs. at gargantuan. Bass also have the tendency to be curious fish. They will nibble at things to see what happens or check the taste. Also, they are aggressive when prevoked or when territory is at stake. Spinners and buzz-baits tend to make them mad enough to strike, but if you hook one, be ready for a fight. For a fish that size, I would use 10 to 15 lb. test line, but some like it at 20 lb. For lures, try a bunch of different things. If the water is clear, use a light color. If it is muddy or stained, darker collors work better. Hope this helps.

Maybe a catfish. Does it have whiskers? Does it have smooth-looking skin instead of scales? If so, then it's a catfish. They are well-known for their love of frogs, and some catfish are actually able to 'walk' on land for short periods of time.
