I am only 58 and have read well over 565,000 books to date. I do not think I have read the best book yet. There have been quite a few that I couldn't put down without reading the entire book in one sitting, but I just haven't found the best 'one' yet.

"The Alchemist" by Paulo Coehlo:
The Alchemist presents a simple fable, based on simple truths and places it in a highly unique situation. Brazilian storyteller Paulo Coehlo introduces Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who one night dreams of a distant treasure in the Egyptian pyramids. And so he's off: leaving Spain to literally follow his dream.
Along the way he meets many spiritual messengers, who come in unassuming forms such as a camel driver and a well-read Englishman. Of course he does eventually meet an alchemist, and the ensuing student-teacher relationship clarifies much of the boy's misguided agenda, while also emboldening him to stay true to his dreams.
"My heart is afraid that it will have to suffer," the boy confides to the alchemist one night as they look up at a moonless night.
"Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself," the alchemist replies. "And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second's encounter with God and with eternity."
Another one that I LOVE is The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupéry:
The Little Prince appears to be a simple childrens tale, some would say that it is actually a profound and deeply moving tale, written in riddles and laced with philosopy and poetic metaphor.

The best book I have ever read is Dave Peltzer's My Story. It is an autobiography of a child who was abused and how he worked himself out of that traumatic experience into becoming a man who used his broken past to help others, It is an amazing book, I could not let it down.

It's difficult to answer this question because there are so many good books out there and I wouldn't like to pigeonhole myself into saying that any one is the best. I mean, what if I find another one next week/month/year that's a thousand times better than anything else?
But I love Lloyd Alexander's 'Westmark" trilogy with a passion that burns.

I've read lots of good books, but my favorites are ones I keep and re-read again. For me, the top one on my list is a series by James Herriot. He was a British veterinarian in the 1930's. His books are told in antedote/short story form, and they relate his personal experiences with the animals he treated and their owners. They are very humorous! The BBC even made a weekly series out of them. And there was a movie. The books are: All Things Bright and Beautiful,All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Wise and Wonderful, The Lord God Made Them All.......

I can't choose just one, but the way I pick the "best" are the ones I read over and over again. Diana Gabaldon's Outlander and Lord John Series come to mind, Anne Rice's Mayfair Witches trilogy, Rosalind Miles' Guinevere trilogy, Nancy MacKenzie's the High Queen,
