They're good... it just depends on your mood... you shouldn't limit yourself to one choice... have some briefs, some boxers, and some boxer briefs... wear what you feel like for the day...
As for brands calvin klein are supposedly the best boxer briefs and easy to find at discount stores like filene's basement and tj maxx...

They are much better than y-fronts or slips in my opinion.
They keep you cooler and look far sexier without clothes.
However - please try to avoid loud patterns (esp paisley) and cartoon or novelty underwear. Definitely a turn off.
If you're not planning to let anyone else see your underwear at any stage it's an entirely personal decision - go for comfort!
