the emission sticker, the only difference is the bore, even the stroke is the same on the two engines, no way to tell by looking. On the 350 4 bolt main engines there will be 010 cast on the block above the motor mount holes on the sides. But this is not even true for all years.

Some of the 350 blocks will be obvious, insomuch as the certain castings are guaranteed to only be 350's. Look for the number everybody's talking about on the flat boss located in front of the cylinder head on the passenger's side (on most passenger car engines, this will be right behind the alternator). The boss sticks out slightly, and the flat part on top will have the number stamped on it. You may have to do a lot of cleaning to get to this number. This will decode a lot of information about the engine. For the last three digits of the engine casting, you'll have to look at the side of the block, below the headers. You should be able to back-check limited information on the engine with that number. Finally, most of the late-model small blocks will have the displacement cast into the side of the engine in liters, as opposed to a last-three-digit code. So, 5.0 will be a 305, and 5.7 will be a 350. Good luck!

While the 400" small block is easily identifiable, I'm not aware of any differences between the 305 and 350 that are easy to spot on the outside.

If you can see the casting # look it up on this site: http://www.mortec.com/

The difference is inside the engine so you can,t tell just by looking at the engine. Check the 'VECI' (vehicle emission control information) located near the front of the engine compartment as it will tell you what engine the engine displacement is.

They only way you can tell is by looking at the cylinders. They are bored out different. To just look at it you probably couldn't tell the difference. You have to look in the engine.

Discounting any special marking on the car, you can't tell the size of an engine from the exterior of the car.
