I've had a few speeding tickets over the years.

If you want to avoid paying the full fine, don't pay it now and wait for your notice of when the hearing will he held. In most states, if you show up in traffic court and the cop doesn't, you can't be found guilty because there's no witness against you.

If the cop does show up and this is your first ticket or your first in several years, you can ask the judge for PBJ (probation before judgment) which means that even if you're guilty, you won't have to pay the fine (or get any points on your license) if you don't get another speeding ticket during the next year.

Even if the judge doesn't give you a PBJ because you've had other recent tickets, almost all traffic court judges will cut the fine (often by half) if you apologize and say you didn't realize you were speeding.

Yes to the first question. Also, I once spied a cop on a hill overlooking the road my much older boyfriend was driving on. It was at night and I was drunk and decided to give them the finger. All lights went on from them. Lit up like a frekin' Xmas tree, and they chased us down the road. Turned out my man's registration had expired and they nailed him for it. The male cop processed the whole deal and as we were free to leave, the female leans in his window and sneers 'Your little lady friend has pretty expensive fingers, huh?' What a *****.
