#5 sounds like a good combo, however, if it is a small tank and you're looking for a colorful and bright combo 6.) Platies and Guppies

just remember an inch per gallon, platies grow to about 2 inches and guppies remain 1.5 inches, these are compatible fish as i have them in a 20 gal. and they get along nicely.

Another combo that works well depending on the size of your tank:
zebra danios
platies
guppies
glo-lite tetra
neon tetra
bloodfin tetra

they're active and they are colorful, however you'll need at least a 20 gal tank if you keep two of each. For example, in my 29 gal I have 2 zebra danios, 5 platies, 2 guppies, 2 glo-lite tetras, 2 neon tetras, and 2 bloodfin tetras.

Tiger Barbs are Semi Aggressive. So you need to add only semi aggressive fish, like Gouramis, Redtail shark, etc.
They will most likely kill your platties and mollies.
I vote for sunburst platties and and some black mollies. Nice color contrast. 1 inch of fish per gallon of water.

#5 sounds good
dont do #3 or 4 as barbs should not be with platies or mollies

I like harlequin rasboras (rasbora heteromorpha) They get about an inch long or a bit bigger, and in a darker gravelled tank with plants, seem to glow. They are peaceful, and not expensive, and usually available in stores.

If the tank is big enough (and it sounds like yours isn't) then a school of neon tetras, harlequin rasboras and cories would be really cool!

Tiger barbs tend to be nippy and a bit rowdy, and it is best to have a school of them so they can spread out the aggression.

I also like white cloud mountain minnows http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_tanictis.php

pearl danios http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=42795,
and brilliant rasboras (also known as redtail rasboras) http://www.elmersaquarium.com/10rasbora.htm
(altho brilliant rasboras get a bit bigger than the others.)

See - now I've made it even harder!

well if you put a tiger barb in the tank with a molly ... you soon will have some eaten on mollys/platies... you don't normally mix those.
