IIM-A rules out hike in MBA seats
Ahmedabad: Indian Institute of Management(IIM)-Ahmedabad Director Bakul Dholakia on Friday ruled out the possibility of any hike in the degree-level MBA seats in the wake of the government's proposal to raise seats to accommodate OBC candidates.
"Our plate is full," he said in reply to a question on the issue, adding that the prestigious institute was in the final stages of the expansion programme undertaken after 2002.
Dholakia said the institute had around 180 MBA seats in 2002, which were expected to be increased to 400 in 2007.
Besides, the institute has already increased seats for higher studies last year.
Evading questions relating to the goverment's proposal to increase reseveration in higher educational institutions to around 50 per cent, Dholakia said he had not recieved any communication so far from the Human Resource Development Ministry for reserving 27 per cent seats in the IIM for OBC candidates.
Dholakia said that for increasing seats at the degree level, a huge investment was required. An estimated Rs 3.5 lakh was needed for adding one seat, he pointed out.
The alumni of IIM, Ahmedabad have joined the anti reservation protest. But the association president too has dismissed government proposal to increase the number of seats.
Said Amal Dhruv, President, IIM-A Alumni Association, Ahmedabad Chapter, "Seat increasing is a very complex issue. It's not like multiplying two by two. The government needs to understand that it just cannot increase seats all of a sudden. What will happen in the meantime then?"
