Several countries contributed in different ways to the democracy we have today.

Greece, Rome England, France and Germany.

Greece was the first to practice primitive form of democracy by having assemblies where the public voted, but it was a very primitive form and not always fair because certain people who didn't own land or hadn't served in the military were not allowed to vote even though they were Greeks.

Rome was the first democracy that had an established Senate. They had elected officials who acted on behalf of the people. This is the first time democracy resembled something similar to what we have today.

Then came England. They were the first to issue some type of basic human right, which inspired the early Americans to craft a democracy where all people are essentially equal.

The French also contributed when they had the French Revolution and got rid of their king. They also drafted a famous paper that talked about the God given right of all humans etc.

Then comes Germany. They were the first to allow women to vote.

So different countries did different things and basically influenced each other.

Yes, the roots of democracy lie in Ancient Greece, which is where it was first practiced as a direct democratic form of government. It was pretty much the one man, one vote form of democracy, but the definition of "one man" was somewhat limited by today's standards.

What else do you need to know?

I believe the roots of modern democracy (not the Democracy of the ancient Greeks, of course!) lay in The Enlightenment...
