D - Great Britain. They were first used at Cambrai, France in 1916 and, for the most part, were total failures. They were slow, got hung up on obstacles too easily, did not maneuver well, and were subject to breaking down all the time. The Germans made mincemeat of them, but were astonished nonetheless. As the war went on, the Allies got smart and started using improved tanks with better tactics (close infantry support, walking artillery barrages, etc.). Still, it was a long way from the desired cavalry-like charges envisioned by many army officers assigned to the first tanks.

it was indeed D great britain, used on the fields of france somewhere in 1916, not sure of the exact date, the germans then in the second world war having seen first hand what tanks were capable of really took the designs to the next level, part of the reason their blitzkrig went on for so long with no european armys capable of sustaining conflict with them.
until of course later in the war when the russian came up with their ingenious T model tank designs that tore shreads through the germans, the yanks and allies had us sherman tanks but the technological edge certainly stayed with the germans on that front.

I do believe it was Great Britain, who invented the tank to defend against the very successful use of the Machine gun by the Germans, who by the way did not invent the MG, but bought the rights from an American inventor.
