I'm in many bands and I write all kinds of music, so I can probably help you.

First of all, what kind of rock?

My main band is emocore, and whenever I write a song, I'm usually really depressed.
I also wrote a really good song (It's called "Take" I'll release it on my band site when it's ready...) after being inspired by a performance by 20 Seconds To Mars during MTV2 All That Rocks...

When I write Metal or Death, I'm usually really pissed off....
I growl a lot, so........

A good way is to listen to some good bands, then get inspired...

Or you can do what I do sometimes. Borrow a line, but mess around with it...
(Ex. Panic! At The Disco: I wouldn't be caught dead in this place.
Me: I won't be caught alive here, so I might as well be caught dead.)

GOOD LUCK, AND HAPPY SONG WRITING! ROCK ON!

Well you need to get a simple beat or riff first.
Something that is easibly recognisable, but sounds good.
Then you need to think about the words.
Now it could be a powerful song, or a comic song.
Then make the basic chords to go with it, put it all together and it should sound alright.

Maybe use some words or rhymes from other songs, and build it up from there, or use a simple rythem to make it at first.

But build up a song, don't just try and do it all at once, think about the timing and stuff, and once you have all the basics right you can add some more interesting things!

If you can write the music and give me a theme I can help you with the lyrics. Basically it's just practice and after someone works through a few songs wih you then you should be able to write a fantastic song.

I have really good ideas that come to me as I am drifting off to sleep. Pay attention to your subconscious. I often have something that is going on and then I think of music that just comes to me and the lyrics follow with ease. I do not believe that there is a tried and proved formula but if it sounds wrong then it probably is. Don't force it. Just let your mind go and the music will come if it is meant to.

Use a time or situation in your life that means something, then write about it, pick out the best parts to relate in your song, add the music later....

all good songs come from the heart-things that are important to you-the message that you are trying to portray. Pick a theme and make it catchy but original. The more you write the better chances of coming up with a gem-practice makes perfact.
